When talking about criminal organizations in Sicily, everyone has the name of "Cosa Nostra" in mind. After all, it is very easy to remember it for its strength that has led this organization to control a large part of Sicily. In addition, names like Salvatore Riina, Giovanni Falconi, Tommaso Buscetta have been on worldwide news for very long time. Not to mention, the myth of the Sicilian Mafia boosted and pumped up by books and movies. The Sicilian Mafia’s growth has allowed it to expand and become a true state within a state. Its leaders are known in Italy and around the world, including the currently unstoppable Matteo Messina Denaro. All this had led many to think that Sicilian Mafia is actually the only criminal organization in Sicily. Beh, actually it is not. Stidda.
As a matter of fact, Cosa Nostra is not the only Mafia organization operating in Sicily. A few decades ago, a rib of the latter gave rise to the Stidda, which over time has taken significant territories from Cosa Nostra in Sicily. Not only that, Stidda has also appropriated some of the main branches of the criminal organizations. It should therefore be made clear that this is not a group of a few outsiders who pursue minor objectives. The Stidda has distinguished itself and still distinguishes itself for a great power on the territory and a not indifferent firepower.
There was no news of the Stidda and its existence was not known until the mid-nineties. At that time Leonardo Messina, one of the most important collaborators of justice for his revelations, spoke of this new organization that had been created at least ten years earlier. The origin of the Stidda starts from the exit of some Cosa Nostra affiliates from southern Sicily who were thrown out for various reasons. The desire for revenge meant that this organization established stricter rules within itself. No organization among clans, but a group united in pursuing illegal scopes.
The declarations of Leonardo Messina suggest that the Stidda has its origins in the expulsion from Cosa Nostra of a part of the Di Cristina family of Riesi, a small town in the inner Sicily not far from Palermo. Others believe instead that the origin of this organization took place in Palma di Montechiaro, another small village in the Southern part of Sicily, where the Benvenuto Croce-Calafato family operated. In any case, it becomes immediately evident that there is no space in the same territory for Cosa Nostra and the Stidda. And this was the reason why the Stidda silently commenced to get organized to fight a brutal war on the territory to conquer more space reducing inevitably the area of influence of Sicilian Mafia.
In addition, Stidda began a recruiting process in the southern area of Sicily where there were many Cosa Nostra outlaws. Several of them decided to joined Stidda and, among others, there were important families such as that of Salvatore Iocolano of Gela. It was here, between 1987 and 1991, that one of the bloodiest mafia wars in Sicily was fought. Ambushes, shootings, killings and family feuds of all kinds.
More than one hundred people died in the area of Gela in that period. At the end of this war, Gela will be in the hands of the Stidda, but this aspect would remain unknown to the police forces for quite some time. The explanation that the investigators give themselves is one of the many wars amongst families of Cosa Nostra for the control of the city of Gela. But it is not so and the Stidda becomes increasingly violent. Shockingly, Stidda organized the murder of the judge Rosario Livatino who is killed down the street hy 4 killers in cold-blood action. There is a truly shocking detail that underlies this killing. The bosses of the Stidda ordered the assassination because they believed that Livatino pursued with force their organization, with the aim of favoring Cosa Nostra.
In reality, this young judge was simply working to counter any Mafia activity in the area of his competence. The Stidda then was still an organization unknown to the anti-Mafia magistrates. In this sense, Livatino's death proved absolutely useless. Recently, Pope Francis proclaimed blessed this young anti-Mafia judge.
