In this video, Devin Pettigrew (Aratlatl on YouTube and Instagram) and I participate in some atlatl duels with Basketmaker II style gear. This was part of a larger set of experiments we conducted, in which we tested a range of combat scenarios. We wrote up part of this research in an article, Experiments with Basketmaker II Atlatls as Combat Weapons, which ran in The Missouri Archaeologist (2017), volume 78.
Experiments like this are important to help us understand the human past, and the role of weapon systems, not only in terms of hunting, but in terms of human conflict as well.
I must emphasize, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. This is dangerous, and mishaps are very possible.
