Why did the Indian stock market crash today?
Indian markets opened sharply lower, with Sensex falling over 2,400 points and Nifty dropping more than 700 points in early trade.
Here are the top 5 reasons behind today’s market fall:
1️⃣ Oil price shock – Brent crude surged over 25% to around $116 per barrel, while WTI crossed $114 after the US-Israel conflict with Iran intensified.
2️⃣ India’s oil dependency – India imports over 85% of its crude oil, so rising oil prices raise concerns around inflation, GDP growth and the current account deficit.
3️⃣ Rupee weakness – The rupee slipped to around 92.28 per dollar, close to its all-time intraday low of 92.35.
4️⃣ Global market sell-off – Asian markets are also falling sharply. Japan’s Nikkei and Korea’s Kospi dropped about 7%, while Taiwan fell nearly 6%.
5️⃣ Heavy FII selling – Foreign institutional investors sold ₹6,030 crore worth of Indian equities on Friday, adding pressure on markets.
