Automatic worker size selection for Buildbarn using feedback-driven analysis:
Buildbarn is an Open Source cluster implementation of the REv2 protocol. Like most commonly used implementations, it supports routing of execution requests based on platform properties. Not only are these platform properties used to select operating systems and hardware architectures, they are often used to specify resource requirements of actions (RAM, CPU cores, etc.).
A downside of using platform properties to specify resource requirements is that it's hard to get right. This generally leads to underutilisation of cluster hardware. In case of compressible resources (e.g., CPU), it may lead to slowdowns that are hard to discover from a user perspective.
In this talk I will be presenting some new work on Buildbarn's scheduler that allows it to automatically pick appropriately sized workers based on previous execution outcomes. Things to to be presented include the storage format for timing data and the execution strategy/algorithm used.
