Leo F. Reisman & His Orchestra – Tell Me Radio, Fox-Trot (Abner, Silver), Columbia 1924
NOTE: Leo F. REISMAN (born 1897 in Boston, Massachusetts – died 1961 in New York) was an American violinist and bandleader, most popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Inspired by Russian-Jewish violinist Jascha Heifetz, Reisman studied the violin as a young man. Unfortunately, he was not accepted into the Boston Symphony, which caused him to turn away from classical music and become involved in the dance music scene. In 1919, Leo Reisman formed his first dance band and quickly gained popularity. In 1921, he recorded his first dance record for Columbia Records—two songs titled “Love Bird” and “Bright Eyes”—and remained with the label until 1929, when he signed with Victor Records and remained there until 1933. He then signed with Brunswick until 1937, after which he re-signed with Victor. Due to his popularity, he was always one of the most prominent bands of his time. He performed with Fred Astaire, Lee Wiley, employed legendary trumpeter Bubber Miley and pianist Eddie Duchin. His favorite singers were Frank Luther, Dick Robertson, and later Sally Singer. Some of his most famous recordings include Cole Porter's “Night and Day,” Con Conrad's “The Continental,” Astaire's “Cheek To Cheek,” and Ager’s “Happy Days Are Here Again” with vocals by Lou Levin. Reisman was primarily a dance band; he was not a fan of jazz, but many of his reecordings from the 1920s are considered „hot”. However, after the Great Depression his style became softer and sweeter, suitable for the top East Coast clientele
The fox-trot “Tell Me Radio” is one of Leo Reisman's earliest and most interesting recordings from the beginning of his “hot” dance years.
Appropriate to the title, the photo review includes photographs and posters from the early radio days.
