A Deep Look at Rutile: Analysis and Future
According to a report by Mordor Intelligence*, demand for Rutile will grow at an average annual rate of 5% over the next five years. In turn, the authors of Grand View Research* are even more optimistic in their outlook, predicting as much as a 6% growth.

Let's see what kind of mineral this is and where it’s used.
Rutile is a mineral that consists primarily of Titanium dioxide (TiO2). It is one of the three most common natural forms of Titanium dioxide, along with anatase and brookite. Rutile has a tetragonal crystalline structure with its color typically ranging from red-brown to black, although it can also be found in various shades of red, brown, and yellow.
Rutile is widely used in various industries:
Titanium production: Rutile is one of the sources of titanium metal. It is an important raw material for the production of Titanium dioxide pigment, which is used in paints, coatings, plastic, and paper to impart whiteness and opacity.
Welding electrodes: Due to its high melting point and excellent electrical conductivity, Rutile is used in the production of welding electrodes. This increases productivity and durability of welding materials.
Enamel base: Rutile provides higher whiteness than other pigments such as zinc white. This contributes to brighter and more attractive enamels. Rutile provides higher coating capacity than other pigments. This means that fewer layers of enamel are required to achieve a uniform finish.
Photocatalysis: Rutile-based materials have photocatalytic properties and are used in environmental applications, including air and water purification. Rutile photocatalysts are capable of decomposing organic pollutants when exposed to UV light.
Rutile boasts of high optical scattering properties, making it a valuable mineral for non-stick coatings such as ovens, microwave ovens, cookware, boilers, and refrigerators. It can reflect light and heat, preventing scorching and reducing surface heating. Rutile can also improve corrosion resistance of the products it coats.
As you can see, the mineral can be applied in various industries and be useful in a range of household processes. It is also worth mentioning that Rutile is often used in car paint manufacture as titanium dioxide contributes to a perfectly white color.
Rutile is mined in Australia, South Africa, Mozambique, Norway, Senegal, Vietnam, Indonesia, Ukraine, China, India, and Sri Lanka.
