A Little Wisdom Helps You Become Smarter !
This video shows a very common but completely useless and dangerous practice on hiking trails: using slanted dead tree trunks to prop up an overhanging dangerous rock.
To put it simply, this trick does nothing to stop the rock from falling, and actually makes the area more dangerous. Here’s why:
First, the slanted brace has a completely wrong force structure. The rock’s weight pulls straight down, and the slanted log can only provide a tiny amount of upward support. Most of the force will just push the log downhill. With no fixed slots at either end, the smooth rock on top and soft leaf-covered soil below mean the log will slip, snap, or slide away instantly with even the smallest vibration, like wind, a small animal stepping nearby, or a light touch.
Second, this prop does nothing to solve the real danger. The biggest risk of this rock is not that it has no support underneath, but that it already has large cracks where it connects to the main mountain. If that connection breaks, the multi-ton rock will come crashing down, and these thin dead logs will be crushed and swept away instantly. They offer zero real protection.
Worst of all, this trick gives people a false sense of safety. It makes hikers think the rock is secure, so they stand right under it to look or take photos, just like the person in the video. Without the logs, most people would immediately see the rock is dangerous and keep their distance.
If you see this kind of overhanging rock on a trail, follow these rules: never stand under it, never touch the logs or try to add more, move away from the entire fall zone immediately, and alert the local trail or park management so professional engineers can handle it safely.
