'The war has reached us': Berlin farmer feels Iran war in fertilizer crunch

Описание: As Iran war enters its third week, farmers like Dirk Peters outside Berlin is feeling the crisis first hand. In the first week of the war, the price of urea, the nitrogen-rich compound that is the foundation of most crop fertilizers, jumped 30%.

As of March 2026, SKW Piesteritz, Germany’s largest ammonia and urea producer, has again cut output and shut plants as increased natural gas prices, key to nitrogen fertilizer production, drive costs sharply higher.

With about half of the world’s food relying on fertilizer and one-third of global fertilizer trade passing through the Strait of Hormuz, prolonged disruption along Iran’s coast could seriously threaten global food supplies.

For Peters, the stakes are simple: without nitrogen in the early growth stage, “we’ll have no yield, or a significantly reduced yield”.
