Natalie Griffith is a 16-year-old student who was shot in her algebra class at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, in September 2024.
She testified today (Tuesday, February 17) in the criminal trial of the gunman's father.
01:20 "I'm pretty sure Ms. Ryan was teaching us some stuff, and we were about to group off into groups so that we could practice the content ... And then she was most likely going to then have us come back together to, you know, check our work and stuff. And as she was giving the instructions, we heard a bang."
02:09 "It happened really fast. I didn't really process what was happening."
02:23 "It happened really quickly. I'm pretty sure there were gunshots. But the thing is, my my brain didn't process any of the sounds that were coming into my ears."
03:12 "Yes, it was painful, but it was also like, it an absence of feeling like something almost frozen off, but not cold."
03:28 "Afterwards, I started to scream. I started to scream. I was screaming that I got shot. I got shot."
04:40 "It was very quick, I think I fell over or miss Ryan was telling us to get down. I can't remember anything that anyone really said. I might have blacked out for for a moment, but I was at some point, I got on I was on the floor, and I was laying down."
06:22 "They were barricading the door, moving desks and chairs in front of it, and I remember, I remember when the police got in, I heard a bang. They were banging on it, and then finally they got in."
07:33 "what were you saying to them?"
"Mainly, sarcastic things. I was trying to distract myself, to distract myself." "What type of things were you saying?"
08:42 "They put a tourniquet on me. I know they gave me pain medicine."
09:25 "What did you think when you saw him?"
"I saw red. I was very mad. I hadn't even processed it..."
09:54 "What did you say to him?"
"Am I allowed to say that?"
"Yes, ma'am"
"You fucking asshole..."
12:17 "There was a chaplain there, and she said how she was a chaplain, and how she was pretty much there to act I was like my semi guardian..."
12:39 "Did you have any surgeries?"
"Yes."
"And how long were you in the hospital after the surgery?"
"About a week."
15:29 "My second surgery was on September 2, 2025."
18:23 "Can you feel your fingers better than you did before the surgery?"
"I want to say yes. It hasn't been long enough, really to see any effects."
19:44 "I don't have complete independent finger function. If you see, I can't move my fingers."
21:13 "Afterwards, I couldn't place where my emotions were. If you told me how I was feeling, I would say it was okay, or I'm fine, because I couldn't find the correct adjective to use, I guess now I would use the word distraught, dazed."
Background:
A gunman killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4, 2024. Eight students and one teacher were injured.
The victims were Mason Schermerhorn, 14; Christian Angulo, 14; Richard Aspinwall, 39 and a math teacher and defensive coordinator for the school's football team; and Cristina Irimie, 53 and a math teacher.
Colin Gray's son, Colt Gray, is awaiting trial on 55 charges, including counts of murder and aggravated assault.
The father's charges include involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder and cruelty to children. Prosecutors say he gave his son the rifle used in the shooting as a Christmas gift, despite being told by law enforcement to keep guns away from him.
The trial was moved from Barrow County to Hall County because of extensive pretrial publicity in Barrow County. Nicholas Primm, the chief judge in Georgia's Piedmont Judicial Circuit, is presiding.
