STORYLINE
Private commercial bus and taxi operators ended a strike in the Indian city of Calcutta, local Indian broadcasters reported on Friday.
The strike had been called to protest against a state government decision to ban commercial vehicles that are over 15 years old, and lasted most of Friday.
The ban, due to come into effect from August 1, has been ordered by the Calcutta high court to reduce pollution in the city.
Local environment activist Subhas Dutta said the state government should have come up with a plan to replace the old vehicles before the ban came into effect.
Calcutta is the third-largest city in India, with a population of more than 15 (m) million.
While thousands of commercial taxis and buses remained off the roads, the state-run buses and trains were operating normally, officials said.
