When the original Waldorf Hotel opened in 1893, it revolutionized American hospitality with 450 luxurious guest rooms—but what guests never saw were the 100 additional rooms allocated exclusively for servants on the upper floors. These hidden servant quarters included laundry facilities where staff worked around the clock to maintain the hotel's reputation for impeccable service. The ratio was staggering: for every 4-5 guest rooms, there was one servant room, housing the invisible workforce that made 24-hour room service and daily linen changes possible. When 600 Waldorf staff walked out during dinner service in 1934, the strike exposed just how dependent the Gilded Age hotel industry was on this hidden army of workers.
