The fishermen of Sri Lanka are the backbone of a vital industry that provides nearly 50% of the nation's animal protein. Scattered across the island’s 1,600km coastline, these communities blend ancient traditions with modern commercial practices, ranging from solitary stilt fishers in the south to large-scale deep-sea crews in the west.
1. Traditional and Cultural Practices
The most famous image of Sri Lankan fishing is Stilt Fishing (Ritipanna), primarily practiced along the southern coast in towns like Koggala and Weligama.
• Method: Fishermen sit on a petta (a crossbar) tied to a vertical pole anchored in the reef. They use a rod to catch small mackerel and herring without disturbing the water with shadows.
• Modern Status: While once a primary livelihood, it is now largely a cultural display for tourism, as many younger fishermen have moved toward more profitable methods.
Coastal Fishery: Uses traditional wooden outrigger canoes (oru) and fiber-glass boats. They focus on local consumption, catching varieties like mullet and shore-seine fish.
• Offshore and Deep-Sea: A major economic driver utilizing large mechanized trawlers. These crews spend weeks at sea in the Indian Ocean, targeting high-value exports like Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin.
• Inland & Estuary: In places like the Negombo Lagoon, fishermen use "stake-seine" nets to catch shrimp and crabs migrating between the lagoon and the sea.
. Community and Lifestyle
• The "Mudalali" System: Most fishing operations are overseen by a Mudalali (a boat owner or merchant) who provides the equipment and capital. The fishermen work for him, sharing a percentage of the catch’s value.
• Mobile Communities: Many fishermen are seasonal; they move their families and boats from the west coast to the east coast (and vice versa) to follow the monsoon winds and calmer waters.
• Labor Force: The sector supports roughly 1 million people (including families), with around 250,000 active fishers.
Current Challenges
Despite the beauty of the craft, the community faces significant hardships:
• Fuel and Equipment Costs: Inflation and economic fluctuations in Sri Lanka have made the cost of kerosene and boat maintenance difficult for small-scale fishers.
• Climate Change: Warming oceans and unpredictable monsoon patterns have depleted coastal stocks, forcing boats to travel further into dangerous deep waters.
• Territorial Disputes: Fishermen in the north frequently face conflicts regarding maritime boundaries and illegal poaching by foreign mechanized trawlers.
