As you are aware there are 3 types of Jaw Relations.
1. Orientation Relation
2. Vertical Relation, and
3. Horizontal Relation
ORIENTATION RELATION
Well, to do an Orientation Relation means we will orient the jaws in its spatial relation to the TM joint. But this makes sense only if we can determine the record and then accurately transfer it to an Articulator which will support such a record.
To determine an Orientation Relation we use the 'FACE-BOW' and then we have to transfer it either to a FULLY-adjustable or a SEMI-Adjustable Articulator. IF we are not using these types of articulators (most dental schools use Mean Value Articulators for their undergraduate Complete Denture Programme)- it is senseless to do a FACEBOW transfer. Therefore it is senseless to do an Orientation Relation IF you are goingto use a MEAN VALUE ARTICULATOR.
This is why you find this step NOT carried out in the Undergraduate Clinic.
But Before you do any sort of Jaw Relation, you MUST adjust the Occlussal Rims on the Record Blocks.
Adjustment of Max. Occ. Rim involves, besides other things a step called Orientation of Occlussal Plane (using a Fox's Plane). PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE THIS WITH ORIENTATION RELATION.
