This makes the challenges of payment fraud and user security problems at Coinbase harder than any other company in the payments space.

In his talk, Soups will first introduce cryptocurrencies and some innovative applications they power. Then, Soups will recount stories of some of the wildest scams he's seen and examples of attacks that he's faced in his role including phone porting attacks, previously unknown two-factor-authentication attacks, hackers attempting to beat online ID verification and more. Most importantly, Soups will describe the multifaceted system Coinbase has built to detect potential fraud and to shut out bad actors using a hybrid of machine and human interactions.

Soups Ranjan is the Director of Data Science and Risk at Coinbase, one the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. He manages the team that is chartered with preventing avoidable losses to the company due to payment fraud or account takeovers. Soups has a PhD in ECE on network security from Rice University. He has previously led the development of Machine Learning pipelines to improve performance advertising at Yelp and Flurry. He is the co-founder of RiskSalon.org, a round-table forum for risk professionals in San Francisco to share ideas on stopping bad actors.
