With 137 victories in his Bf 109, Wolfrum's evaluation of America's premier WW2 fighter shocked his superiors. He found the cockpit "disconcerting" after the cramped confines of his Messerschmitt—but admitted the P-51 was "a fine airplane." Combined with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and revolutionary laminar flow wing, the Mustang could escort bombers all the way to Berlin. By 1944, the Luftwaffe avoided P-51s when possible. Göring reportedly said: "When I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the jig was up."
