【Pls look at the top comment first】Heavy Pettin was formed in 1981 in Glasgow. The band name was inspired by UFO's 1976 album "No Heavy Pettin". Five members Gordon Bonnar (guitars), Gary Moat (drums), Brian Waugh (bass), Steve "Hamie" Hayman (vocals) and Punky Mendoza (guitars) joined forces to give the biggest and best rock bands at the time a serious run for their money. The band was formed from the ashes of the Glasgow band "Weeper," a band formed in 1975 by drummer Gary Moat, guitarist Gordon Bonnar and bassist Brian Waugh.
From loyal fans' memories, Heavy Pettin is a well-known part of NWOBHM era. The band was deeply influenced by traditional British heavy metal, but their songs perfectly combine hard rock with melodic rock.
Before Heavy Pettin's debut came out, the band put out a single EP "Roll The Dice", which was released by Neat Records (label of NWOBHM bands like Venom, Raven, Jaguar and Tygers of Pan Tang). After a short-term contract with the label, Heavy Pettin started to get ready for debut making and signed a record deal with big label Polydor. Even before releasing a full-length, Heavy Pettin' participated in the Reading Festival in July 1983 with Black Sabbath, Marillion, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Suzi Quatro, Anvil, Magnum, Mama's Boys and Lee Aaron. In October 1983, the band's debut was released, which was produced by Brian May.
"Big Bang" is Heavy Pettin's third studio album. Compared to their first two albums on Polydor, this album was rarely mentioned. It was a delayed album in 1989, which was originally recorded in 1987. In 1989, Heavy Pettin had already split up. UK label FM Revolver Records finally released this almost lost album, symbolizing the end of Heavy Pettin's 1980s era.
In 1984, Heavy Pettin supported bands like Kiss and Ozzy Osbourne on their British tours. In 1985, their second album "Rock Ain't Dead" came out. The title carried the glory of rock spirit. This album is a must for whoever dreams of the 1980s and wants to review the glorious moments from Heavy Pettin's songs.
After the second album, they participated in the Metal Hammer Fest in Loreley, Germany alongside well-known bands like Nazareth, Venom, Metallica, Wishbone Ash, Savage Grace, Running Wild, Pretty Maids and Warlock. They returned to the scene three years later to support the Magnums.
From the quality of all the 1980s albums by Heavy Pettin, I never think the band declined after the second album. Their music remained quality on each track. Steve Hayman's singing left fans with deep impressions on each album. However, a band's fate used to change in the changeable music scene. In 1987, they participated in the "Eurovision Song Contest 1987" with the track "Romeo", but finally the nomination failed and Polydor discharged the band.
Musically, the album "Big Bang" sounds pretty nice, which is a big treasure for both hard rock and aor fans. The songs are tuneful and soulful. They focused on melody presentations for the album, inherited from the second album "Rock Ain't Dead". In 2019 and 2020, "Big Bang" was reissued twice, including this fantastic bonus track "Rock You Endlessly". Experiencing ups and downs, Heavy Pettin came back for reunion and continues to rock us endlessly.
These songs "Born To Burn", "Romeo", "Lonely People", "This Is America", "Looking For Love", "Madonna On The Radio !", "Heaven Sent", "City Girl" (a bonus track originally in the second album) and this song "Rock You Endlessly" all perfectly make fans hear Heavy Pettin is also a wonderful aor band, standing on the top-class level, whose songs feature the taste close to notable Nordic aor bands Alien, Pride, Da Vinci, Skagarack and the like.
Though the song "Romeo" failed in the contest nomination, this is a perfect and romantic aor gem, blowing souls away with saxophones as a blessing for every ear. "Two Hearts" is another soulful ballad which carries the romantic vibe, touching hearts deeply. "Don't Call IT Love" is a flaming hair metal gem, lighting up the album on the climax. How can melodic rock fans miss "Big Bang", a melody bang for hungry ears.
