Bending the cost curve in cancer care -- dreams and reality

Cancer care costs are rising worldwide at an unsustainable rate, especially in the U.S. The options available for containing costs are to limit services, limit the cost, limit the beneficiaries, or a combination of these approaches.

Together with Dr Bruce Hillner, Dr Thomas J. Smith has proposed a list of 10 controversial approaches to bending the cost curve downwards.

In this seminar, Dr Smith will illustrate progress of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine "Choosing Wisely" campaign, and present selected examples of redesigned care models that honour patient choices, preserve or improve the quality of care, and may lower costs. Incorporation of hospice and palliative care is a vital component of these models.
