Staking and pruning passion fruit explains about how we manage our passion fruit orchard from planting until harvesting in order to provide farmers with income throughout the year. The passion fruit are grown for the fresh fruit and juice.
During planting passion fruit , the stakes are placed 3M apart within the row and 3_6M apart within the row depending with the topography of the land. The trail wires are tied on the stakes at the height of 2M within the row.
After that the passion fruit is planted 6M apart within the row to allow good growth of the main vine . When the passion fruit is 1M tall the main vine is staked along the string and the secondary vines are pruned systematically. When the main vine reaches the trail wire 2M tall the two buds are pinched off to enable the branches vines to grow in opposite direction along the trail wire.
The main vine grow as it develops the secondary and tertiary vines . The secondary vines are best in the production of passion fruit .
The secondary and tertiary vines are pruned to allow light and formation of flowers and also to avoid the hiding and over shading of pest .Also during pruning the diseased parts and yellow leaves are removed to avoid entangled with secondary and main vine s .
After harvesting passion fruit ,the secondary vines is pruned off to allow the formation of new vines again and Nene the cycle begin again in order to provide the farmers with income throughout the year.
