Today we’re inside the exchange trying to resurrect a proper piece of “old school” exchange test kit: the U-Tel UTEST-312.
it’s a brand new rabbit hole.
Chapters:
00:00:00 Intro.
00:00:27 Thank you, and what are we doing?
00:01:53 What is the Utel?
00:05:03 Whats inside?
00:08:13 First power up
00:13:17 First look at wiring this up.
00:16:40 Worth the wait?
00:22:15 All cabled up.
00:23:56 Wiresharking the UTEL
00:26:01 Making custom cables.
00:30:25 First console connection attempt.
00:37:37 Are we in?
00:51:18 Wired in ready?
01:00:58 Success ?
01:05:33 Outro ?
The goal? Get this thing doing what it was built for: PSTN and DSL copper line testing from inside a UK telephone exchange environment — the kind of kit that helps engineers prove whether a fault is in the pair, the jumpers, the MDF, or the broadband side.
The problem…
I’ve got NO guides, barely any documentation, and not even the right cables.
So we do it the only way we can:
✅ build custom cables
✅ crack the lid off and see what’s actually inside (spoiler: I did NOT expect that hardware…)
✅ figure out what talks to what, and how it’s meant to be controlled
✅ try to get it responding, switching, and running real tests
And because this one fought back hard… I had to send out the SOS more than once — massive thanks to Zen (especially Brad, Lee and Mark) for helping me keep the momentum when I hit the wall.
So the big question:
Can I actually get this old thing working… or is it destined to stay as a very expensive metal box with LEDs?
🎥 What to expect in this episode:
• What the UTEST-312 is (and where it sits in the exchange)
• Reverse-engineering the ports and cabling (because… of course)
• Lid-off teardown & surprising internals
• Getting console/control access and making it talk
• Testing logic: PSTN vs DSL line paths, and what we can realistically prove
• The moment of truth: can it run meaningful line tests and behave like it should?
📡 If you’re into real exchange hardware, copper networks, PSTN history, DSL fault-finding, and “how did engineers actually diagnose this stuff”… you’re in the right place.
