Here we present the 5 hairless dog breeds: the Xoloitzcuintle, the hairless dog of Peru, the Argentine pile dog, the hairless American Terrier and the Chinese Crested.
1. The xoloitzcuintle
This dog comes from Mexico and its complicated name means "dog of the god Xolotl", which was the Aztec god of spirits, fire and bad luck. The Aztecs, for whom it was considered a symbol, raised it to eat it, but other cultures have used it as a healing dog, in the sense that its proximity was used to alleviate diseases.
This dog belongs to an awake, lively and affectionate race with personality very similar to that of the Fox Terrier, although its physical conformation resembles that of the Lebrel.
2. The hairless dog of Peru.
Like the hairless dog of Mexico, the hairless dog of Peru was raised in its origins to be eaten. It was the same race as the Inca dog but with different skin color. With time it went from being a food to being the favorite pet of the nobility. The hairless dog of Peru has three varieties: small, medium and large, and can weigh, depending on the variety, between 4 and 25 kilograms.
3. The Pila Argentino dog
Without leaving Latin America we find this race, very similar to the previous two but originally from Argentina. The peculiarity of the Pila Argentino dog is that in the only areas where it has hair (head and tail) it has a crest shape. This breed is not very big but like the hairless dog of Peru there are three sizes: small, medium and large.
4. American hairless terrier
The American hairless terrier is a small breed originally from the United States that does not weigh 7 kilograms. It is relatively new, given that the first litters appear in the 70s. As they do not have a single hair and have mottled skin, it is a very demanded breed, although it is difficult to adopt because it is not very widespread.
When descending from the Terrier buzzards, the American Terrier is a lively, dynamic and playful dog that gets along very well with children. He is also very intelligent and familiar. The disadvantage of this dog is that having the skin so unprotected, needs very specific care so that it does not spoil.
5. The Chinese Crested.
The Chinese Crested is a small dog that weighs between 5 and 7kg and has two varieties: one with hair (powderpuff), and another without hair (hairless), because baldness in this breed is an incomplete dominant gene. This means that in its hairless variant its skin is soft and has tufts of hair on the legs, head and tail.
The Chinese crested is a nice, sensitive and cheerful dog. It is very playful and agile, although it can be a bit stubborn. He is very loyal to his people and often feels attached to a particular person, although he always interacts with other people, dogs and animals. It is an intelligent and easy to train dog, as well as a perfect pet that requires constant care and attention.
