A lecture by Professor Hongbiao Dong of Leicester University, focusing on the weld pool during the arc welding of steels. The lecture is a part of a series held at Warwick University's WMG Group. The talk features the physics and metallurgy of welding, computational thermodynamics, phase field methods, computational fluid dynamics and other mathematical modelling.
Abstract: Welding is the most economical and effective way to join metals permanently, and it is a vital component of our manufacturing economy. In welding, work-pieces are mixed with filler materials and molten, to form a pool of metal that upon solidification becomes a strong, permanent joint. In this talk, I will briefly introduce principal phenomena occurring at three significant length scales (a) macro-scale, (b) meso-scale and (c) micro/nano-scale during arc welding, and then to talk about our experimentally observed internal fluid flow in the melt pool, followed by the solidification modelling to illustrate the grain structure evolution.
