"This is the first time in Yemen that an exhibition has been launched to show manuscripts of the holy Quran through various eras, from the moment that Islam reached Yemen until the 14th century hijri (on the Islamic calendar, which ended in the 1980s). The exhibition is special because it shows the most valuable manuscripts of the holy Quran through all eras, starting from the first century of Islam with a copy of the holy Quran that was written by Imam Ali bn Abi Talib, going all the way to the 14th century."

"We are fascinated to learn about the fantastic manuscripts at the Great Mosque, going from the first century (of Islam) to present time. We did not know about these manuscripts before, so we want to thank the people who organized the exhibition for their amazing efforts. This should be a continuous exhibition because the Great Mosque has rare manuscripts, and there is nothing like them in any Muslim country."

STORYLINE:
Manuscripts of the Quran dating back to the earliest day of Islam are on display at the Great Mosque of Sanaa, giving Yemenis the chance to explore script written by hand during various eras of Islam.
The exhibition featured 39 handwritten manuscripts from 14 centuries of Islam including one that is said to have been written by Imam Ali, Prophet Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law.
Visitor Faisal al-Eloffi said he was fascinated by the manuscripts on display at the exhibition, adding "this should be a continuous exhibition because the Great Mosque has rare manuscripts."
Visitors will be able to tour the exhibition and check the manuscripts until March 21, when the event ends.
"The exhibition reflects the Yemenis' connection with the holy Quran and its manuscripts since the time of Imam Ali," said Yasser Abu Himailah, the exhibition director.
"The exhibition showcases examples from the earliest century of Islam and each century since until the 14 century," he added.
