What happens when the mining stops? In Mpumalanga, South Africa, retired mines once symbolized environmental damage and lost potential. But now, thanks to a groundbreaking collaboration with South Korea and support from the World Bank’s Korea Green Growth Trust Fund (KGGTF), these landscapes are being reimagined as hubs of biodiversity, sustainability, and green jobs.
This short film follows a South African delegation’s eye-opening journey to Korea, where they explored how Korea has successfully turned post-mining scars into models of inclusive, eco-friendly growth. Hosted by the Korea Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation (KOMIR), the visit showcased nature-based solutions, community engagement, and green innovation.
