More than 20 years ago, a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon at Riley Children’s advocated for urgent approval to use The Berlin Heart to support a child with heart failure. Within two hours, Riley Children’s received approval to implant it on one very brave patient. That patient went on to testify for FDA-approval of The Berlin Heart in the US, leading to an FDA-approval and more than 4,000 patients impacted worldwide today.
