La excursión a Mil Ventanas de Güimar es sin duda una de las más singulares y sorprendentes de Tenerife, o de cualquier parte del mundo.

Con sus oscuros túneles, senderos estrechos, desniveles de hasta 1000 metros que inducen al vértigo, vistas increíbles y una historia increíble, tiene todo lo que un verdadero aventurero puede desear. Es, sencillamente, una visita obligada para cualquier excursionista ávido.

Por impresionante que sea esta excursión, las Ventanas de Güimar no son aptas para todo el mundo.

No la recomendaríamos a personas que sufran claustrofobia o miedo extremo a las alturas. También hay que tener en cuenta que no se trata de una ruta de senderismo oficial ni está mantenida. En pocas palabras, hay riesgo de caída de piedras y caídas. Hay que estar muy concentrado. Si haces esta ruta, lo haces bajo tu propia responsabilidad !

Los túneles se construyeron originalmente como un canal de agua para transportar el agua desde lo alto de las montañas. Las ventanas se crearon para proporcionar iluminación natural y ayudar a los trabajadores a deshacerse de los escombros creados por la excavación.

Todo era trabajo manual, una empresa masiva que dice mucho sobre las dificultades que la gente de Tenerife tenía que pasar para conseguir agua dulce en su día.

Lo que nos parece extremadamente fascinante es que a pesar de todos estos esfuerzos los túneles nunca se utilizaron para el fin previsto y ahora se erigen como un monumento a un trabajo inmensamente duro hecho en vano.

The hike to Mil Ventanas de Güimar is without a doubt one of the most unique and amazing hikes in Tenerife, or anywhere in the world really.

With its dark dark tunnels, narrow paths, steep vertigo-inducing up to 1000 meter drop-offs, incredible views, and unbelievable history it has everything a true adventurer may desire. It is, quite simply, a must-do for any avid hiker

As impressive as this hike is, the Ventanas de Güimar are not suitable for everyone.

We would not recommend it to people who suffer from claustrophobia or extreme fear of heights. Also bear in mind that this is not an official hiking trail and is not maintained. To put it simply, there is a risk of falling rocks and falls. You have to be very focussed. If you do this hike, you do it at your own risk !

The tunnels were originally built as a water canal to carry the water from high in the mountains. The windows were created to provide natural illumination and help the workers dispose of the rubble created by excavation.

It was all manual labor, a massive undertaking that does say a lot about the hardships the people of Tenerife had to go through to procure fresh water back in the day.

What I find extremely fascinating is that despite all these efforts the tunnels were never used for their intended purpose and now stand as a monument to immensely hard work done in vain.
