One crucial aspect to backcountry navigation is knowing how to set declination on a compass. The difference between true north (how your map is oriented) and magnetic north (where your compass points) is called magnetic declination. In order to accurately trek to your destination along a bearing, you have to adjust and correct for it.
Failing to adjust for declination, could land you miles off your objective depending on where and how far you’re traveling. On a USGS topographic map, the declination is printed in the margins of the map. In this video we’ll show you how to adjust your compass for declination.
