Howdy there, neighbors. Ian with etrailer here. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and installing the etrailer Class III two inch by two inch hitch on our 2018 Jeep Compass. Let's go over a few features of that and then we'll take care of the install. Now the Jeep Compass, even being a smaller SUV, is a very popular SUV we see come through the shop pretty often here. And so hooking this hitch up is gonna open you up to those bike racks or cargo carriers to extend the amount of cargo you can carry out to the campsite with you and your people that you wanna be out there with.
So going over some stats for this particular hitch, we are looking at 4,000 pounds on the towing capacity, 600 on that tongue weight, so downward pressure there. But of course you would wanna refer back to your owner's manual of your Compass to make sure that number is not lower as far as the ratings. And if it is, stay with that lower rating for safety. Now this is going to feature a five eight inch pin hole. The pin is not included with the kit, so please make sure you order that along with your hitch if needed.
We do have locking options to help keep your accessories safe. And I do love these open style safety chain loops. They're just gonna make it really easy to be able to get any type of retainer you might have on your safety chains onto those loops. A couple measurements to keep in mind, going from the center of our hitch pin hole out to the edge of the bumper, we are looking at four inches. So that'll give you an idea if you measure that center pin hole on your accessory, if it's going to be able to clear if it does fold or anything like that.
And another measurement we'd like to look at is from the ground to the top inside edge of our receiver tube, we're looking at 13 inches. So that'll give you an idea for ground clearance, maybe if you've got a lower sitting cargo carrier or something like that. Now I am going to walk you through that install, and I'm gonna show you a couple ways that I do it that is a little bit different than the instructions. So just follow along there and I'll walk you through everything. But if you happen to watch the video and think to yourself, "I don't want to try to tackle this," please do check out our dealer locator on the website.
We'd be happy to help find you a trained professional in your area that can get this thrown on for you. But for all those DIYers, let's go ahead and hop into it. So beginning underneath the vehicle, we are gonna be having our exhaust hang down. So to support that, what I've done is used a cam buckle strap, going from one side on the cross member on the driver's side, over to the same point on that passenger side. We're gonna have that nice and snug for now while we get everything loose. And we'll start back at the fascia here. There's gonna be two T27s that we need to remove to start. Now one more thing to note before we get going on our exhaust here is that anything I do here on the driver's side is gonna be duplicated on that passenger side unless otherwise noted. So we're just gonna be showing over here so it's easy to see on camera, but it's all set up unless we give a little note about it being different. Now for our exhaust hangers, we're gonna be removing this 13 millimeter bolt here. We'll just take that all the way out. (drill whirls) Now with the exhaust, we're going to just loosen up that cam buckle strap supporting the exhaust while it's coming down. Get that down far enough that we can access the heat shield underneath. And on that heat shield, we're gonna find three total 11 millimeter nuts that we need to take loose. So we'll just get a socket up in there and drop this heat shield out completely. With that last one coming loose at the rear, we'll just support that heat shield so it doesn't fall down onto us and pull that all the way out. (metal clanks) Now the three holes we're gonna identify is gonna be this one towards the rear, most of the vehicle that's got these little square stickers on it. We're gonna pull this sticker off. And then there's also two on the side that we need to remove as well. You can just pierce that sticker and then pry away to get it to come loose. And then we're gonna do this same with these two stickers on the side. Now here on that frame rail where we've removed the rearmost sticker on the bottom, we
