About the album:
Krishna Bhajans, the first devotional album by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh to receive a wide commercial release, holds a unique place in their musical journey. Issued by CBS Records in 1983 on LP and audio cassette, this album introduced mainstream audiences to the soulful devotional side of the legendary ghazal duo. What many listeners don’t realise is that Krishna Bhajans was based on an earlier recording titled Samarpan — an album Jagjit and Chitra ji had originally composed and sung for the ISKCON Temple (Hare Krishna Movement) earlier that same year. The original Samarpan cassette had been released privately by ISKCON as part of their Golden Avatara tape series, featuring extended prayers and Sanskrit verses that glorified Srila Prabhupada, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Radha–Krishna, and the Vaishnavas. When CBS acquired the rights to these recordings later in 1983, the company edited and restructured the material before reissuing it as Krishna Bhajans. To appeal to a broader Hindu audience, CBS removed many of the ISKCON-specific shlokas and mantras, including the Prabhupada Pranama, Vaishnava Pranama, Pancha Tattva Pranama, and several repetitions of the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra. The result was a more concise and accessible devotional album while retaining the soul of the original offering. Despite these edits, the Krishna Bhajans album preserved the divinity and serenity of Jagjit Ji and Chitra Ji’s voices. Tracks like “Jaya Madhava Madana Murari,” “Yasomati Nandana,” “Bhaja Hu Re Mana,” and “Sabse Oonchi Prem Sagai” became enduring devotional favourites. Some of these tracks, however, feature fade-outs where parts of the original Samarpan recordings — such as extended tabla passages or full Hare Krishna chants — were trimmed. An additional track, “Krishna Jinka Naam Hai,” was newly introduced in the CBS version and did not appear in Samarpan. Jagjit Singh is said to have donated all his royalties from this album to ISKCON, a testament to the spiritual sincerity that underpinned the project. In later years, when CBS India wound up operations in the late 1980s, its catalogue (including Krishna Bhajans) passed first to PAN Music, and later to BMG Crescendo in the early 1990s — both of which have since become defunct. Today, the copyrights of Krishna Bhajans are owned by Sony Music Entertainment India, the present successor to CBS’s music catalogue.
