How Would Mikel Arteta Set Up Arsenal looking at starting XI, formation & transfers. Unai Emery’s results at Arsenal have dropped off throughout the season and the sacking of the ex Sevilla & PSG coach looks likely if negative results continue over the busy Premier League period in December.
Mikel Arteta has had three years experience alongside fellow countryman and master tactician Pep Guardiola. It could be time for the ex-Everton star and Barcelona youth product to move into management. Being part of a Manchester City side that picked up all three available domestic trophies last season and winning two Premier League titles on the bounce - you could understand the ex-Arsenal player being linked to a move back to the North London side as manager.
How would Mikel Arteta set this Arsenal side up? There’s a lot of potential with the current Arsenal fullbacks that Unai Emery has failed to make consistent use of. Hector Bellerín and Kieran Tierney have the potential to be the most complete pair of Premier League full backs. Bellerin has been eased back into the Arsenal first team this season, playing mainly in the Europa League and Carabao Cup, where the Gunners have scored on average 4.3 goals per game when Bellerin has featured. Tierney has also made a slow start to the season after moving from Celtic with an ongoing injury - but when fully fit he should start to show the form that earned him his move. In his four full seasons at Celtic, Tierney was directly involved in 30 goals in just 95 SPL games, a rate of a goal involvement every three games. The pair are both solid defenders as well, so could perform both an inverted support role like Guardiola has adopted at Manchester City or they could play the flying wing backs, more in the vein of Klopp’s Liverpool pair.
Having the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and even the young Brazilian prodigy Gabriel Martinelli firing goals away - means he will not be worried about the goal scoring side of things and rather look at a very leaky Arsenal defence. Starting off in goal with Bernd Leno, who has still performed to a decent standard and hasn’t really been at fault for many Arsenal goals. The main concern would be in the centre of defence with Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis all performing below the required level for top six Premier League side. If Arteta were unable to make any transfers, David Luiz and Rob Holding, once fit, would probably be the partnership best suited to building from the back. Next season, William Saliba will join up with the squad and will add a good ball playing defender with high potential to the centre back pool. Despite being just 18, Saliba stands at six foot four and once he grows into his frame he could make an imposing Premier League defender. However with David Luiz getting more eccentric with age and with question marks still over Holding and Callum Chambers, Arsenal and Arteta would be wise to invest in another top young talent. Dayot Upamecano would be a fantastic addition - the RB Leipzig defender is one of the best under 21 defenders in the world, perhaps only second to teammate Ibrahima Konaté and even that is up for debate.
Should Mikel Arteta be the next Arsenal manager?
