Responding to Threats to Student Press Rights

-Looking at your current school board’s policy for student publications, are your publications designated a forum of any type? Is review and/or approval of content mentioned at all? What specific actions or even types of coverage are mentioned or restricted? Advertising? Political speech? Would you say this policy has been being enforced?

-Does your specific publication have more specific policies in place for itself? Does it designate itself as a forum? Do students have final say on editorial and publishing decisions? Would you say these policies have been being followed?

-Does your state have a New Voices law? If so, does your school board policy match up with the protections and restrictions outlined in the state law? If not, is there a movement started to get such a law passed?

-Links to media coverage of the censorship cases mentioned in the video (with a few additional ones) are included as “examples,” below. Read through one or two for more explanation. What do you think of what happened? Could something similar happen at your school? How would you react? Have you already experienced anything similar? What are some ways you think press rights at your school could be strengthened?
