Campuan Sonata is named after the Campuan Temple in Bali. It was composed in December 1982, for Mr. Lim Chong Keat.
The sonata for Viola and Piano is in Five Movements:
I: Moderato
II: Processional
III: Prelude and Fugue
IV: Andante espressivo
V: Andante doloroso - Maestoso - Jhala
Jhala or Jhala Taranga is a Sanskrit word meaning waves of water. This is a style of music played onporcelain cups containing various levels of water. The cups are struck with sticks. The piano is used to create this water music with its rapid dance-like figurations. The sustained pedal must be held throughout the Jhala music. Under this music the viola softly sings a chant-like meditation.
The sonata is full of expressive long breathing singing melodic lines. The viola is the timeless voice of the soul of nature, the soul of trees and mountains, the soul of creatures and lost civilisations. The music ends without really ending but seeming to go out into the endless universe. - Alan Hovhaness on Campuan Sonata
