🔹 HOW EGUNGUN FESTIVAL IS CELEBRATED (AWORI TRADITION)
The celebration begins with Aisun (the sacred eve) — a night of spiritual preparation and anticipation.
On this night, Egungun Alaroye emerges, marking the opening of the family’s festival and signaling that the ancestral path has been spiritually prepared.
As the night gives way to morning, the main day of the festival begins.
In the morning, Egungun Epo comes out, covered with fresh leaves.
In Yoruba tradition, Epo (palm oil) symbolizes life, blessing, purification, and spiritual nourishment. This stage prepares the ground for the principal ancestral manifestation.
Later in the day, the main Egungun, Egungun Ayelabola, makes its appearance.
At this moment, the ancestor moves among the people — blessing the family, relatives, invited guests, and everyone present.
The celebration continues with dance, drumming, symbolic displays, and cultural performances, each action carrying deep ancestral meaning and drawing the attention of the community.
