Off the very southern tip of the French Riviera between Nice and Marseille lies a protected national park, Port-Cros, one of only a few underwater marine parks in the Mediterranean. Though it’s July, the water is not warm, as evidenced by the “7mm” wetsuit of the diver teasing one of the playful octupuses (octopi?) here. But don’t let that dissuade you – there’s plenty of colorful life to see in the sea.
From the start, the colors of the coral explode – bright orange, yellow, and turquoise – before we spot our first octopus, who retreats into his safe hiding place. Then a large magenta gorgonia teases our senses – can this color be real? It is. The next yellow octopus is not so shy and extends a tentacle out to say hello.
Pale yellows, pink, gold, lavender, purple – the corals are in so many colors here. Where else can you so so many living colors in such a small space in nature? Looking up from the coral we see a large school of dozens of yellowtail barracuda. Perhaps they are relishing the rainbow colors of the corals as well.
