In March 2024, Latanya J. Whitfield — a nine-year front desk manager at a 320-room beachfront resort in Cresthaven, Florida — was charged with multiple counts including theft under Florida Statutes § 812.014 (aggregated), scheme to defraud under FS § 817.034, and deceptive and unfair trade practices under FS § 501, after a corporate audit prompted by a coordinated complaint revealed she had been running a deliberate double-booking scheme from approximately 2020 through the date of her arrest. Whitfield exploited her authority over the property's reservation system by manually flagging select peak-season bookings as "tentative — pending verification," suppressing them from available inventory and allowing the same rooms to be re-sold at higher walk-up rates. When original guests arrived — frequently with children after long drives or flights — she informed them their reservations could not be honored, applied no-show penalties to their accounts despite their physical presence in the lobby, and sent them into a fully booked Florida market. Approximately 900 families were affected over three years, with combined cancellation fees and duplicate-room revenue totaling approximately $1,600,000. The scheme unraveled when an attorney whose family was turned away on a spring break holiday weekend filed four coordinated complaints in forty-eight hours, forcing an audit that recovered the complete reservation-system flag log — recording Whitfield's credentials on every manual suppression for three years. Among the affected families was a couple who had saved for fourteen months to take their three children to Florida for the first time, only to spend the first night of their trip in a car in a resort parking lot while Whitfield's replacement guests checked into their room.
