As extreme weather events become more frequent, migrant workers in cities like Bengaluru are among the most affected. But are existing welfare systems equipped to respond?
In this episode, Ameena Kidwai from the Migrants Resilience Collaborative (MRC), an initiative of Jan Sahas, explains how everyday climate disruptions are leading to lost wages, increased health risks, and uneven access to support, especially for migrant workers in outdoor occupational sectors like construction.
Drawing on the report "Towards Climate-Responsive Social Protection: Addressing Extreme Weather Risks for Urban Migrant Workers", the conversation highlights gaps in existing welfare schemes, including both demand and supply side challenges. It also offers recommendations on how small design changes can make national and state schemes more responsive to climate-related risks.
