The Ford Focus has long been a staple of the compact car segment, known for its engaging driving dynamics and practical design. For 2024, Ford has given its popular hatchback a refresh that brings updated tech and styling tweaks while retaining the Focus' fun-to-drive character.
On the outside, changes are subtle but effective. A revised front fascia features sleeker headlights and a more prominent grille, giving the Focus a slightly more aggressive look. Around back, new taillights and bumper designs keep things fresh. Overall, the Focus remains a handsome and modern-looking compact.
The biggest changes come inside, where a massive 13.2-inch touchscreen now dominates the dashboard. Running Ford's latest SYNC 4 infotainment system, it's a huge upgrade over the previous 8-inch unit. The graphics are crisp, responses are quick, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. While the screen's size and proximity to the driver take some getting used to, it brings the Focus' tech game up to par with class leaders.
Under the hood, Ford has simplified the engine lineup. Most models use a 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder, available in 125 hp and 155 hp flavors. Both get mild-hybrid assistance when paired with the automatic transmission, helping to boost efficiency. A 1.5-liter diesel option is also available in some markets.
On the road, the Focus continues to impress with its sharp handling and composed ride. The steering is direct and nicely weighted, while body control remains excellent for the class. The 155 hp EcoBoost provides peppy acceleration, though it can sound a bit strained when pushed hard. For maximum thrills, the Focus ST hot hatch soldiers on with its 280 hp 2.3-liter turbo four.
Practicality remains a Focus strong suit. Rear seat space is generous for the class, and the 391-liter cargo area is usefully shaped. However, some rivals do offer more outright trunk volume.
Pricing has crept up over the years, with the Focus now positioned as a semi-premium offering. It's no longer the bargain it once was, but the driving experience and newly upgraded tech help justify the cost.
In a segment increasingly dominated by crossovers, the 2024 Ford Focus proves there's still a place for the traditional compact hatchback. With its winning blend of style, technology, and driving dynamics, it remains one of the top choices in its class.
