In August 2024, investigators from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Cold Case Unit and the San Jose Police Department re-examined evidence from the crime scene. A latent fingerprint found on a pack of Eve cigarettes in Ralston's car was run through an updated FBI database, leading to a match with 69-year-old Willie Eugene Sims, a former U.S. Army private who had been stationed at Fort Ord at the time of the murder. Sims had a prior conviction for assault with intent to murder in 1978 but had moved out of California before DNA collection became standard practice, thus evading entry into national DNA databases.
