While I admit that its a little grainy, this historic footage captures a flight test of the Dornier Do 32 that was held at Fort Benning, Georgia for staff of the United States' 11th Air Assault Division (Test) as well as other units, scientists and political leaders.
The test was put on by the Ryan Aeronautical Company and Dornier Flugzeugwerke to demonstrate the capabilities of their new single-pilot helicopter. The 11th Air Assault's commanding general Major General Harry Kennard can be seen throughout the film as well as other 11th Air Assault troopers.
The test pilot puts the helicopter through some impressive maneuvers to demonstrate its capacity for use in America's new "air assault / mobility" concepts. And if you look close, you'll see Ryan's "Flex Wing" on display alongside the other craft shown that day.
Unfortunately for Ryan and Dornier, their one-man helicopter was never accepted for use by the 11th Air Assault Division (Test).
