Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about the game of La Soule.
La Soule, also known as Choule, is an ancient medieval football sport that shares a lot of similarities with Mob football.
It is believed that the game originated in France and it slowly gained popularity over the years.
The game is now extinct and it is not played anywhere in the world despite the multiple revival attempts because it was banned from being played.
The basic objective of the game for each player is to score more goals than the opponent.
The teams usually consisted of players belonging to two neighboring parishes.
The teams can have as many players as they want and there is no fixed upper limit for the number of players on a team.
It is believed that each team had players ranging from 20 to 200 depending on the availability.
The game is played outdoors in the town around a church that could belong to either of the team’s parish.
Researchers are still working on gathering the rules and regulations of the game and there is not a lot known about the proceedings.
The basic objective for each team in the game is to take the ball to a designated area.
The designated area is predetermined and it can be any church within the team's own parish or the opponent’s parish.
The game is played for an extensive amount of time and it lasts for several hours or even days.
La Soule is extremely aggressive in nature since players are allowed to engage physically with the other players.
In the game, players are allowed to move the ball using hands, feet, or sticks.
The game is played with a ball that is either made out of wood or of a pig’s bladder stuffed with hay or horsehair.
At the beginning of the game, both teams take their position and it starts at the border between two parishes.
There is no boundary to the field and the game continues over different terrains, rivers, mud, and several obstacles.
The target for every player is to gain possession of the ball and safely bring it back to their own church by any means necessary to score a goal.
The team that manages to bring the ball first and score a goal is declared the winner.
