Presentation by Lexi Perry, Virginia Tech, at the 2026 Barley Improvement Conference
The barley breeding program at Virginia Tech has fully integrated genomic selection at all breeding stages. We will give a description of how we implemented these technologies, successes and areas where further work is needed. Examples will include genomic selection for glycosidic nitrile levels, and the implementation of a sparse testing regime to increase the number of breeding lines under evaluation. Difficulties of mate-pair selection for crossing and the complexities of selecting for many agronomic and malt quality traits will also be discussed.
