The Darby 40‑Miler is a commemorative run, ruck, or walk along the shore of Lake Garda from Peschiera del Garda to Torbole. Participants are expected to finish within 12 hours, honoring Col. William O. Darby and the Soldiers who lost their lives near Torbole in April 1945.
This challenge pays tribute to Col. Darby, founder of the U.S. Army Rangers, who was killed by artillery near Torbole on April 30, 1945, along with 25 members of the 10th Mountain Division who perished during a sudden storm while crossing Lake Garda that same day.
The event was conceived in 2010 by Rick Tscherne (also known as Ranger Rick), a Ranger veteran and author of The Ranger’s Digest, a book full of fieldcraft tips and tricks to improve combat effectiveness of soldiers (the book held in my hand at the end of the video).
The route retraces the path Col. Darby and his troops took during the final days of World War II in Italy. Over the years, the Darby 40‑Miler has grown into an annual memorial event, drawing around 500 participants each year and supported by both U.S. Army units and local Italian communities.
