Geology 🌍🔍
The Rhine Falls 🌊 came into being during the last ice age, around 14,000 to 17,000 years ago, where erosion-resistant rocks 🪨 narrowed the riverbed. Flash back to 500,000 years ago, and the landforms we see today were formed. Up until roughly 132,000 years ago, the Rhine took a western route past Klettgau. This old riverbed was soon filled with gravel and pebbles 🏞️.
Then, a change in direction ⬅️➡️ occurred for the Rhine around 132,000 years ago at Schaffhausen. This new river channel also ended up being covered with gravel. Parts of today’s Rhine include remnants of this ancient path.
The Rhine’s present course was carved out during the Würm glaciation, flowing over a mix of hard Jurassic limestone and soft gravels. This interaction created the magnificent falls we see today. The iconic Rheinfallfelsen rock remains from that ancient limestone cliff. Interestingly, erosion has been minimal because the Rhine gets little sediment from Lake Constance.
For those interested in a deeper dive, the formation story of Rhine Falls is beautifully displayed at the Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen 🏛️.
Economics 💰⚙️
The north of the falls was historically an industrial hub. Back in the 17th century, it housed a blast furnace for smelting iron ore ⛏️. This ironworks remained operational until the early 19th century.
There were proposals in the 1880s to divert significant portions of the Rhine’s flow for electricity ⚡. However, nature lovers and scientific societies stood up against this. By 1944, plans for a power station were in place, but in 1951, a massive public petition 📜 led by Emil Egli, with supporters like Hermann Hesse, prevented the power station and safeguarded the Rhine from extensive hydropower projects.
Even today, the potential of generating around 50 MW of electricity from the falls is being weighed against its immeasurable value as a tourist attraction 📸.
Tourism 🌐📷
The Rhine Falls attract tourists to the neighboring areas like Neuhausen am Rheinfall, where they can appreciate the Wörth Castle 🏰 (Swiss German: Schlössli Wörth), and Laufen-Uhwiesen, with the majestic Laufen Castle overlooking the falls.
For an immersive experience, tourists can take boat 🚤 rides to the Rhine Falls' rock, or opt for viewing platforms 🌉 on either side of the Rhine. These platforms are accessible via narrow, steep stairs (with a fee on the Schloss Laufen side). Convenient elevators are also available in some locations.
Guided tours starting from Laufen Castle offer deeper insights. A youth hostel welcomes younger travelers in Schloss Laufen. For a taste of the local cuisine, restaurants 🍽️ abound in Schloss Laufen, Schlössli Wörth, and the Rheinfall park.
