For the first time in over 100 years, we’ve discovered a new firefly species! A species now named, Luciola singapura (Singapore firefly).
In 2016, lead researcher Dr. Wan Faridah Akmal Jusoh found two unidentified specimens of fireflies at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.

🔎 To solve this mystery, Dr. Jusoh and her team visited Nee Soon Swamp Forest in Singapore to collect additional specimens of this unidentified firefly species.
🔬 After a series of analyses, the team finally confirmed that the firefly was distinct from the other 19 firefly species in the genus Luciola and officially named it Luciola singapura.
Catch our interview with Dr. Jusoh in this Asia’s Changemakers episode as she brings us into her world of taxonomy!
