The Madras Presidency was one of the major administrative divisions under British rule. It included parts of present-day Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, and even the Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
👉 Odisha was separated in 1936.
👉 Coastal Andhra & Rayalaseema became Andhra state in 1953.
👉 In 1956, the States Reorganization Act created Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala & Andhra Pradesh.
👉 Telangana was merged with Andhra to form United Andhra Pradesh.
👉 Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar later became Union Territories.
This transformation was driven by linguistic movements and the demand for cultural identity.
