This is a lovely little box clock. It was probably made in about 1659. Like all these early clocks, it's an experimental clock. It's different in detail from anything before or afterwards for that matter. And it's got the two trains, one above the other, which is unusual. Normally the two trains are side by side. So this one actually has the bell underneath, but you'll see that in a moment. So the little plain box veneered, it's an oak box veneered in lovely ebony and very fine mouldings around the glass in the door. The door is hinged on this side and opens from just a catch on that side to reveal the dial. And you can also get in to swing the pendulum with a sliding glass which comes out and then you can swing the pendulum without having to open the movement. But the movement is mounted on the dial and the dial is hinged onto the case. So if I release the little catch here, I can swing open the movement and it's very very close fitting to reveal everything working. There appear to be three of these little box clocks. And this is the smallest and probably the earliest because the going train in this clock has five gears between the barrel spring driving. There's no fusee in this one, so it's a straight drive from the barrel up through the various levels up to the escape wheel. Whereas most the others can get away with four. So that would be a cost reduction. This means that this is the earliest.
