NSW Police Minister David Elliott says law-abiding citizens have “had a gutful” of residents flouting public health orders in the wake of the state recording its highest tally of daily COVID-19 infections.
Law enforcement authorities have been granted additional powers close public premises, workplaces and businesses should they be found to be in breach of health measures.
Mr Elliott urged residents to report breaches, saying the police detested having to increase penalties.
“The NSW Government and the NSW Police detest the fact that we've had to increase these penalties and provide extra power to the police force,” he said.
“It is certainly not something that we want to do and it is, in fact, something that we cannot wait to shred.
“These powers, these health orders, these restrictions are something that the Government cannot get rid of quick enough.
“But it's quite clear from the overwhelming number of people that are doing the right thing, that same overwhelming number of people have had a gutful of their fellow residents doing the wrong thing and that's evident by the fact that we are now getting tens of thousands of people reporting breaches through Crime Stoppers.”
