Xiamen, also known as Ludao, is a prefecture-level city, sub-provincial city, separate planned city, and special economic zone under the jurisdiction of Fujian Province of the People's Republic of China. During the Western Jin Dynasty, Tong'an County was established and Xiamen City was built in 1394. On August 29, 1842, the Qing government was forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing with Britain due to its defeat in the First Opium War. Xiamen became one of the five treaty ports stipulated in the Treaty of Nanjing. On November 2, 1843, Xiamen officially opened as a port. On November 21, 1902, the Qing government officially approved the "Land Regulations of Xiamen Gulangyu Concession", and Gulangyu Island became the "Concession of All Nations". In 1935, Xiamen City was established. In 1980, the Xiamen Special Economic Zone was established with the approval of the State Council of China. Xiamen City has won the "United Nations Habitat Award".
