There is a lot to see for scuba divers in NSW, hidden along our coastline are a number of world renowned dive sites, and unbeatable wildlife experiences. And this is your guide to some of our favourite sites.
This Experts Guide to Scuba Diving in New South Wales was produced by my team for @visitnsw. For all operators featured you have full access to all footage by heading over to the DNSW Content Library.
Starting off our list is Montague Island off Narooma, which is sanctuary for a massive array of wildlife, and the largest seal colony in the state. For those after interaction, this one’s for you. We dove Narooma with operator Narooma Charters, and Montague Island Tours.
Moving north we have the Ex HMAS Adelaide shipwreck, which is an awesome wreck dive around 32meters deep, with the best parts sitting at about 20. The wreck itself has been designed for penetration with entries and exits cut all around the wreck, making it safe to explore the insides. We dove this site with operator Dive, Spear and Sport.
Up next we have Fish Rock Cave, now this epic dive not only has Australia’s longest swimthrough, but it’s also home to one of the worlds largest populations of the critically endangered, and extremely docile Grey Nurse Shark. Their rugged looks truly don’t match their personality. We explored this beautiful underwater paradise with South West Rock Dive Centre.
Moving further north we have South Solitary Island, similar to the last site, the island is home to a year round population of Grey Nurse, as well as a range of anemones and turtles. Operators used were Jetty Dive Centre in Coffs Harbour.
A short drive north of here and you have Julian Rocks off Byron Bay. The wildlife here is getting tropical, expect turtles, rays, migratory leopard sharks in the summer, and grey nurse in the winter. Our team dove with both Byron Bay Dive Centre and Sundive throughout our shoot.
Our final stop is Cook Island off Tweed Heads, it shares a lot of the same wildlife as Julian Rocks, but it’s also home to the state’s largest turtle breeding colony. For our final destination our team dove with Watersports Guru.
