This talk took place on May 3, 2024, and was organized by the Henry H. Arnhold Forum on Global Challenges and the Program in Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research.

Adam Phillips is a practicing psychoanalyst in London and an essayist, described by Joan Acocella in The New Yorker as "Britain's foremost psychoanalytic writer." He is the author of more than twenty books, most recently On Giving Up (2024) and On Second Chances: Shakespeare and Freud (2024, co-authored with Stephen Greenblatt) and On Wanting to Change (2021). Since 2003 he has been the general editor of the new Penguin Modern Classics translations of Sigmund Freud. He is also a regular contributor to the London Review of Books.

Paul Kottman is Professor of Comparative Literature and 2023-2024 chair of Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research. He is the author of Love as Human Freedom (Stanford University Press, 2017); Tragic Conditions in Shakespeare (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2009); A Politics of the Scene (Stanford University Press, 2008). He is also the editor of The Art of Hegel's Aesthetics: Hegelian Philosophy and the Perspectives of Art History (Fink, 2017); The Insistence of Art: Aesthetic Philosophy After Early Modernity (Fordham, 2017); and Philosophers on Shakespeare (Stanford University Press, 2009). Paul edits the book series, Square One: First-Order Questions in the Humanities (Stanford University Press).
