The Back of Falls Creek is one of the toughest climbs in Australia and part of a couple of event rides in the Alps of Victoria - The Audax and The 3 Peaks. If you're doing either of these you need to know about this climb - This video will give you a small idea of how brutal it is and what to expect.
With an opening 400 metres at around 18 % the corner at the base of the climb is aptly named WTF corner. The road levels off briefly and you'll then hit an unrelenting 3-4km section of 10-12%. This is Pain Lane - the hardest part of the climb. It is exposed, remote and the road surface is dead. If you can make it to the 5 km mark there is salvation - the road levels off and you can recover. While it still pinches up al the way to Trapyard gap at 12 km in there are small respites along the way.
After the 12 km mark things get easier - pacing your self through the first 5 km is the hardest bit.
If you are riding either the Audax or 3 Peaks we strongly suggest you go find out about this beast before the event. Only riding it will will educate you fully.
